Flocculation Method in Farming Wastewater Treatment

 

At present, the flocculation methods applied in the field of livestock and poultry wastewater treatment mainly include Chemical Flocculation, Microbial Flocculation, Magnetic Flocculation, and Electro-coagulation.

 

Chemical Flocculation

Through the action of chemical flocculants, colloidal particles and small suspended solids in wastewater are aggregated to form large flocculents. Solid liquid separation is achieved through gravity sedimentation, thereby completing the removal of pollutants from the aqueous phase.

  • Advantages: Mature technology, fast flocculation, and good treatment effect.
  • Disadvantages: Low floc strength, poor compactness, loose structure, and low separation efficiency.

Microbial Flocculation

Microbial flocculants are a type of secondary metabolites with flocculent activity produced by microbial metabolic activities, mainly composed of macromolecular substances such as polysaccharides, proteins, and cellulose.

  • Advantages: Low dosage, high flocculation activity, biodegradability, no secondary pollution, safety, non-toxic, and wide applicability.
  • Disadvantages: High production costs, immature production processes, and insufficient stability of ingredients and flocculation effects.

Magnetic Flocculation

Magnetic flocculation is the synchronous addition of magnetic seeds on the basis of traditional coagulation, combining them with coagulants, pollutants, etc. to form a magnetic complex.

The method of accelerating solid-liquid separation and removing pollutants by utilizing its own characteristics of heavy weight and fast settling, or by using magnetic separation devices.

  • Advantages: Magnetic loading can effectively improve the structure and strength of the floc, thereby improving the solid-liquid separation efficiency.
  • Disadvantages: The dosage of magnetic powder is large and expensive, and the magnetic seed separation and recovery technology is not yet mature.

Electro-coagulation

Electro-coagulation is a pre-treatment method that combines solid-liquid separation of livestock manure and high concentration phosphorus removal.

Electroflocculation treatment of liquid manure with phosphorus concentration greater than 400mg/L in pig houses can effectively improve the physical and chemical properties of the manure, improve sedimentation performance, and achieve a solid particle removal rate of about 90%, with phosphorus removal rates ranging from 72.6% to 86.3%.

  • Advantages: Strong flocculation and adsorption performance, the generated small bubbles play a role in stirring and flotation, the operation is simple, no chemical agents need to be added, the amount of sludge generated is small, and secondary pollution is not easy to occur.
  • Disadvantages: During the reaction process, the anode will continuously dissolve, requiring regular replacement of the electrode. There are also issues with electrode passivation and high energy consumption.
