The wastewater discharged contains organic substances, has a strong oxygen consumption, and a large amount of suspended solids are discharged with the wastewater.

Wastewater Characteristic

The food industry has a wide range of raw materials and a wide variety of products, with significant differences in the amount and quality of wastewater discharged. However, in general, the main pollutants in food wastewater include
  • Solid substances floating in wastewater, such as vegetable leaves, fruit peels, shredded meat, bird feathers, etc
  • The substances suspended in wastewater include oil, protein, starch, colloidal substances, etc
  • Acids, bases, salts, sugars, etc. dissolved in wastewater
  • Sand and other organic matters entrained by raw materials
  • Lethal bacteria, etc
 

The common characteristics of food industry wastewater are high content of organic substances and suspended solids, easy to decay, and generally no significant toxicity. The main hazard is to eutrophic the water body, causing the death of aquatic animals and fish, causing odor from organic matter deposited at the bottom of the water, worsening water quality, and polluting the environment.

 

Treatment  Methods

In addition to properly treating wastewater from the food industry according to the characteristics of water quality, biological treatment is generally recommended. If there is a high requirement for the quality of the effluent or due to the high content of organic matter in the wastewater, a two-stage aeration tank or two-stage biological filter, or a multi-stage biological rotary table, or a combination of two biological treatment devices, or an anaerobic aerobic series biological treatment system can be used.

The sludge produced by the food industry has high organic content, high viscosity, and high oil content, making it difficult to treat. If a traditional plate and frame filter press or belt filter press is selected, it is not only easy to form mud cakes, but also easy to block the filter cloth, requiring timely cleaning, which is inefficient, and labor costs are high.
